Man to die by hanging for stealing handset, N10,000

A DELTA High Court sitting at Akwukwu-Igbo, headquarters of Oshimili North Local Government has sentenced a man to death by hanging a GSM handset armed robber.

Vincent Okwekwu was accused of robbing a GSM handset and N10, 000 cash from his victims while armed with a gun, for the offence of conspiracy while he got 21 years jail term for each of the other two counts.

The offence took place at Umueha quarters, Ibusa but nemesis caught up with him when his victims raised alarm that attracted members of the vigilante group in the area that led to his arrest as the hoodlum made to escape from the scene of crime while the two other members of the gang escaped into a nearby bush.

The court gave the verdict having convicted the accused of the offence of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, the substantive offence of armed robbery which was reduced to a lesser offence of robbery.

Prosecution from the Department of Public Prosecutions had told the Court that Vincent Okwekwu on November 1, 2009 with two others now at large broke into the apartments of one Ofoyeju Peter and Tietie Moses and robbed them of cash valuables amounting to N10, 000 and a telephone handset while armed with a gun and a cutlass.

Prosecution further told the court that the accused who was later handed over to the police, admitted to have committed the crime in his voluntary statement but denied the charge as he pleaded not guilty to all the three-count charge read to him by the court clerk when he was arraigned before the court for trial.
