Jonathan calls, congratulates Buhari


President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on his victory in the Saturday’s presidential election.

A top government official told our correspondent that Jonathan had called Buhari on the telephone to congratulate him.

Presidential election results so far! PDP in early lead...(See Full Result)



INEC has announced results for 8 states and the FCT, Abuja - (total 9) and so far PDP is leading with 2, 332, 734 votes while APC has 2, 302,978 votes, though APC won five states and PDP four states. 
The commission has reconvened to 8pm tonight to allow sufficient time for other states to bring in their results. We are still expecting results for 27 states.

The man in the photo above was allegedly shot dead by a soldier this morning at Bauchi's INEC Office after the military tried to gain access into the office. Residents of the state had blocked the military from entering the office as results were being collated and this sparked the violence. The residents had held a vigil outside the INEC office to await the announcement of last Saturday's election when the military showed up. Another man was hit by a stray bullet. Four-year-old boy, sister burnt to death in Lagos fire


A four-year-old boy, identified as Paul, and his sister, 1 year, have been burnt to death after fire gutted a bungalow in the Igbo-Efon, Lekki area of Lagos State.

The incident happened around 5am on Saturday.

PUNCH Metro was told that the fire began from a cooking stove which exploded in the bungalow where the victims lived with their parents.

Insecurity: INEC Postpones Elections Indefinitely In 18 Yobe Polling Units


Resident Electoral Commissioner in Yobe, Habu Zarma, on Sunday said the electoral commission, INEC, had postponed elections indefinitely in 18 polling units in Geidam Local Government Area of the state due to security challenges.

He told journalists in Damaturu, the state capital that security challenges in the council area had scared adhoc staff from going to conduct election in the affected units on Saturday and Sunday.

No INEC official is leaving this place- Asari Dokubo rants as he fails to get accredited


Former militant, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo has aired his displeasure after his PVC was rejected by the card reader at his polling unit at Bakana in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The ex militant said no body would leave the polling unit till everyone is accredited as the card reader was also unable to accredit other voters .
He said it was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise his people.

Two killed as Boko Haram attacks polling stations in Gombe


At least two people were killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on polling stations in northeast Nigeria on Saturday, residents and an election official told AFP.

The attacks happened in the villages of Birin Bolawa and Birin Fulani in the Nafada district of Gombe state, which has been repeatedly targeted by the Islamists.

An election official, who requested anonymity, said: “We could hear the gunmen shouting, ‘Didn’t we warn you about staying away from (the) election?'”

Card reader fails to authenticate over 300 eligible voters in FCT


ABUJA – As voters troop out enmasse to exercise their franchise at the presidential and National Assembly elections, the Card Reader appears to be the cause of the little delays witnessed in many polling units.

In Zuba, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja and Madalla in Niger State but close to the FCT, over 300 people were unable to be authenticated by the Card Reader and the Presiding Officers in some of the units visited told Vanguard that those that the Card Reader could not complete their authentications were those that could not complete their registration process especially on issue of finger print.

Man arrested for using monkeys, snakes for robbery


The police in Lagos State have arrested a 27-year-old robbery suspect, Mohammed Nafiu, who specialised in using monkeys and snakes to dispossess people of their money and valuables.

One of the monkeys was also arrested and is presently in police custody.

Nafiu told the police that apart from the conventional tool (gun) used by most robbers, the sight of a snake or monkey unsettles and scares people. He said he was able to dispossess his victims of their valuables when confronted with these animals, especially fully grown ones.

Nigeria ranks fourth on Interpol’s African wanted list


Nigeria ranks fourth of the 54 countries in Africa with the highest number of citizens on the Interpol wanted list, Saturday PUNCH has gathered.

Interpol is the International Criminal Police Organisation that facilitates international police cooperation, with global membership of 190 countries, spread across four continents.

According to the data on Interpol’s website, 63 Nigerians comprising 56 males and seven females have been declared wanted by the organisation for various offences.

Okorocha’s aide arrested for arms possession


The Imo State Police Command has arrested a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Okechukwu Okorocha, for illegally being in possession of arms.

Briefing newsmen at the State Police Command Headquarters in Owerri on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said Okorocha was arrested after operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, who were acting on a tip-off, conducted a cordon-and-search operation at his residence on Fridayand recovered three pump action automatic rifles with 24 live cartridges and a Kenwood walkie-talkie.

Twin sisters who killed mother get 30-yr sentence


Jasmiyah and Tasimyah Whitehead were 16 when they stabbed their mother, Jarmecca, 34, to death. They stabbed her so violently and repeatedly that they severed her spinal cord.

The twins attacked their mother after getting into an argument on January 13, 2010, at their home in Conyers, Georgia before school. They dragged her injured body to the bathtub and watched her die slowly, before setting out to school.

The twins recounted the events that day up to the mother. They related how it had begun as an argument when it turned violent.

A Nigerian gospel singer who has released several songs while in prison is now on death row after being found guilty of smuggling Heroin into Indonesia.Okwudili Ayotanze is be executed with two other Nigerians,Jamiu Owolabi Abashin who was caught smuggling Heroin using a false name Raheem Agbaje Salami, and Silvester Obiekwe.
40-yr-old Ayotanze was caught in 2001 trying to smuggle 1.15 kilograms of heroin from Pakistan into Soekarno-Hattainternational airport in Jakarta.
